Walking for Alex and every local family like ours

This November, I’ll be walking in the Sunshine Walk for a reason that’s deeply personal.

In August, 2023, my husband Alex died of cancer.

Alex was a veteran who served for 17 years. He was strong, grounded, and deeply loyal,  not only to his mates, but to our family. 

He faced his cancer diagnosis with courage and grit, and we were lucky to have each other through it all. But no amount of strength could protect us from the heartbreak of saying goodbye.

Throughout his treatment since we relocated to Albury in 2021 to be closer to the kids, we were supported by the team at the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre. 

Being able to access care locally meant everything. It meant Alex could sleep in his own bed. It meant the kids could still be with their dad. It meant I could focus on being a wife and a bonus mum and not just a carer navigating an unfamiliar system hours from home.

So we are walking. Team Hoffensetz are walking in Alex’s honour and for each other who now carry Alex’s legacy on.

We are walking for every other family who has sat in a treatment room, hoping for more time. 

We are walking because no one in our region should have to face cancer without the best care, close to home.

The funds raised through the Sunshine Walk stay right here in our community. They help buy essential equipment, train staff, fund wellness programs and counselling, and give families like ours the chance to be together, even in the hardest moments.
