The time has finally come to shave my beloved dreadlocks! They’ve been untouched by a pair of scissors for over 10 years and that’s about to change on the 5th of March. I’m raising money for the Albury/Wodonga Cancer Centre and would really appreciate your support. Every dollar counts and 100% of all funds raised will go to the cancer centre and will help someone in need.

How & Why?

My bald father first sowed the seed when he teased me about my receding hairline, telling me I’d better start enjoying some different hairstyles while I still had hair to comb. I’m sure he meant a mullet or Mohawk, but it was a bet with a best mate that saw me leaving the beauty college 10years ago with short terrible looking spiky dreadlocks and he ended up with an eyebrow piercing that already looked infected. At last count there was over 55x dreadlocks with a combined length of just over 50metres, the longest few are well over 1m and hang outside of hoodies which often draws slack-jawed looks from kids in supermarkets and whispers of “that boy has a tail”, which usually results in parents explaining to them that’s what happens if you don’t brush your hair.
To me it’s just hair, but there’s some unavoidable myths & stereotypes associated with having dreadlocks, from repeatedly being asked for marijuana or the wives tail that someone’s Aunts, brother in law twice removed had a nest of red backs growing in their hair. Truthfully though my dreads could probably be cleaner, over their years I’ve turned them into somewhat of a Swiss Army knife with everything from tooth picks, safety pins, bread tags and even a bottle opener stashed away for easy access. Ashamedly I must admit there’s now a shower cap & hair dryer in my bathroom and they’re not my partners. This same partner who has only ever known me with the locks, to soften the blow and hopefully appease her I’ll also be shaving my beard along with the dreads on March 5th 
Thanks to Michelle Hensel I’ve always been aware of the amazing work of the Albury Wodonga Cancer Centre, I was lucky enough to be a friend & teammate of her son Braedon Hensel, a true hero and personal inspiration. I was only fifteen when i was first diagnosed with a rare tumour of my hip, despite it being benign it aggressively deteriorated my hip to a point that it’s now left me permanently on crutches. 
Back when I was first diagnosed the Cancer Centre wasn’t a shadow of what it is today and patients like myself with rare conditions would have to make the sometimes weekly or monthly 7hr round pilgrimage down the Hume Freeway to Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre for treatments and scans.
I’ve always been intensely private about my struggles and will often hide behind the dreadlocked stereotype of being a skateboarder who had an accident when asked about the reason for being on crutches. I’ve been blown away by peoples generosity so far, it really goes to show that cancer touches so many lives and it sadly isn’t going anywhere soon so hopefully the money raised from my shave can go towards some new equipment or expertise, saving people like myself from needing to take time off work etc and allow them to fight their battles from the comfort of their home towns surrounded by their support network of family and friends,
